Woolcott, Chris
Chris Woolcott was born in Exeter in 1944 and was 1 of 4 children. He left school at 15 and attended college in the evenings whilst working during the day. He qualified as a surveyor and always worked hard.
He loved football and started attending City home matches from a very young age. His dad took him and his brother along and they would wear their school caps so that they could get in at a discounted rate!! Later in life he rarely missed a match be it home or away. He was very much Mr Exeter City, helping out in various roles over the years: working on the turnstiles, running the 50/50 draw, selling programmes, you name it Chris probably has done it. Back in the 70s and 80s he would help with maintenance in the ground, help out in the office and even did some work in his professional capacity as a surveyor, both for the football club and various players over the years. However, most people will know Chris from his years running Grecian Travel, which at times took over his life!!
Chris was also a local referee and was know to be very tough in this role, but was also the fairest. He loved all things football and being a keen traveller, he traversed the world visiting football stadiums everywhere he went. The only thing he loved more than the football was his family, however he did manage to combine the two – he dragged his girls along to games and included them, hence they became ball girls before getting given jobs selling programmes and 50/50 tickets!
As we all know, he was never afraid to voice his opinions and certainly let the team or referee know when he wasn’t happy! Apparently way back in the day Theo Foley commented on the man that was giving them “what for”!!!
It was a sad day in November 2022 when we lost Chris – a true Exeter City legend.
The club posted the following after we lost Chris.
"All at Exeter City were saddened to hear of the passing of Chris Woolcott at 77. Chris was a Grecian through and through and one of the most passionate City supporters with a fantastic personality. Chris was well know for his role with Grecian Travel where he helped thousands get to away games around the country. Chris was also joint organiser of 50/50 that has raised considerable funds for the Academy, steward supervisor and weekend cleaner at the Park. He was a key member of the Supporters Club and contributed so much to the club he loved.
You'll be missed, Chris ❤️
