Long associated with youth cricket in Devon, Ted Ashman was a longtime Exeter City supporter and father of a future supporters’ club chair and matchday host.

Born in Trowbridge, and educated at Dr Morgan’s Grammar School in Bridgwater, Ted first became interested in Exeter City when training to be a teacher at St Luke’s College. Remaining in Devon he eventually became head teacher of the primary school in Liverton, near Newton Abbot. His son Giles Ashman taught at Exeter School and followed the Grecians from the age of four going on to chair the supporters’ club and work as a matchday host at St James’ Park.

Becoming involved in cricket relatively late in life, Ted managed the first county under-11 representative team in 1985 and, over the years, worked with players such as Craig and Jamie Overton, Chris Read, Lewis Gregory and Dom Bess. He was chair of the English Schools Cricket Association in 1999/2000 and was also treasurer of the Devon Cricket Board.

At St James’ Park Ted was a willing volunteer selling raffle and competition tickets to help raise funds. After his death in March 2019, at the age of eighty-one, he left £5,000 to the supporters’ club which was later allocated to the Exeter City Community Trust for school holiday activities for disadvantaged young people.
