Darryn Welsh, who had captained the Devon Schools under-18 team, appeared for Exeter City's 'A' team in the Devon and Exeter League between 1992 and 1994. A Plymouth Uiversity student at the time, he played for the British Universitites representative team. 

Skippering Devon Schools under-18s in 1991/92 - and later studying at Plymouth University - he was recommended to City by former player John Hore, then manager of Torrington, when he was playing for the North Devon club. Darryn subsequently had two seasons appearing for City's 'A' team in the Devon and Exeter League before the team folded in 1994.

Scoring regularly under the management of Mike Radford, and having earlier had trials for Tottenham Hotspur, he went on to playfor the English and British Universities as well as Bideford,  Mangotsfield United and Dursley Town.
