St Sidwell’s Reserves v St David’s
SATURDAY 19th SEPTEMBER 1903.
St. Sidwell's United 1st XI. had a blank day on Saturday. Next Saturday the 26th, they play their first match of the season on their new ground at St James' Park, when they meet a strong XI. from Paignton. The match will immediately follow one between their Reserves and Exmouth Albions.
St Sidwell's Resrrves v St David's
Their Reserves on Saturday played their second League match of the season, their opponents being St David's 1st XI., who are considered one of the strongest teams in the League, but who were beaten by one goal to love. Both teams had absentees, but good substitutes were found by each. St Sidwell's although thoroughly deserving their victory. had to go all the way to win. The forwards played a splendid combined game, being well led by Russell, who had hard lines on several occasions in not scoring. Aplin was exception- ally tricky, and combined well with Fenwick on the wing. The St David's forward line, which included Heath, of the Devon Regiment, could do nothing against the strong defence of St Sidwell's and did not get really dangerous during the game. Worner, the Sil Sidwell's centre half, was especially conspicuous. His marking of Heath was the feature of the game. and the judgment used by him in feeding his forwards was good to watch. He was, without doubt, the best man on the field. Peters played well at back.
St David's were served well by their backs, who they have to thank for the lowness of the score against them, due, as well, to over-excitement on the part of St Sidwell's Kelly, at half, also played well. Smeath, at centre half, was rather weak in defence, and certainly was much below his usual form.
