The ground, St James's Field, was a perfect quagmire, it being practically impossible to kick the ball any length at all. The soldiers commenced operations and almost immediately pressed, Bailey eventually clearing his lines, End to end play next followed, Richardson putting through' for the Battery and Winter replying for St Sidwells. The soldiers who were far the heavier team, made ground fast with dangerous rushes, and a hot shot by Yates found the net. This was followed by an even more sensational goal by Richardson, Another goal by Yates in the 2nd half, was followed by one from Eveleigh for St Sidwells. The United were awarded a penalty for a foul, but Sellick failed to score with the kick, Robinson was fouled, and injured, and a short halt was made while he recovered, Free kicks to St Sidwells were numerous, but little advantage was taken of them, and Richardson scored again for the Battery.
Only one Senior League match was contested in Exeter on Saturday, when St. Sidwell's entertained the 112th Battery at St James's Park. The climatic conditions and the state of the ground were not conducive to good football, and the game was of a rather scrambling order. The soldiers played a vigorous game. and in the end secured 2 commendable victory by four goals to two St. 'Sidwell's have now lost two matches in succession in the Senior League. They have a capital team, but have apparently lost their form. They opened the season most auspiciously, and were prolific goal-getters Their defence has recently been strengthened by the inclusion of Ashford, and, on paper. are a strong combination. A return to their old form would be welcome, and it is hoped will be speedy.
Heavitree v St Sidwell's Reserves
Heavitree played Si Sidwell's Reserves in a Junior League match, at Heavitree, in wretched weather, and the game ended in a win for the visitors by three goals to nil. The encounter was more evenly contested than the visitors expected, Heavitree putting out a very strong team for this match, being assisted at back by Campbell (late of St Sidwell's ist XI.). who, with the assistance of Storrer, splendidly broke up the combination of the opposing forwards. The Saints seconds scored through Fenwick (twice) in the first half, once through faulty play by Ford in goal. The second half was of a very even character, each team attacking it turn, but the Heavitree forwards could not break through the visitors' defence. St Sidwell's scored once, through Aplin.
For Heavitree, Storrer (back), Scene (half), and Le Francis and Henderson (forwards) were the pick, and if Heavitree can keep the same team together, they certainly ought to do better than they have. For the winners, the defence of the backs and goalkeeper was superb, and they ougiat to go a good way through the season before they have that duck removed from their sheet. Warner played well at half, and the forwards were a fine lot, but Aplin would do better if he trapped the ball instead of letting it bounce against him
Final Score:-
Heavitree 0-3 St Sidwell's Reserves
Goals:- Fenwick 2, Aplin.
