St Sidwell's Chiefs 5 Dawlish 0.
Scorers
St Sidwells Thomas 3, Robinson 2,
Neither team was at full strength, but Dawlish were the chief sufferers in this respect, as arriving three men short, and being able to get only two subs, they played throughout the game with four forwards. In the first half only one goal was scored, Thomas beating O'Neill with a low shot. The United pressed hotly from the restart, and a curious incident occured when the Referee gave them a penalty against O'Neill for taking too many steps while holding the ball, Mr Harvey forgot for a moment that a Referee may alter his decision and stuck to his verdict, and Morgan the St Sidwells Captain, intentionally kicked the ball wide of the goal, which was the correct action in these circumstances, In the 2nd half St Sidwells were all over their opponents, scoring 4 times, Robinson and Thomas obtaining two goals each.
Report 2 from the Exeter Gazette
The heavy condition of the ground greatly interfered with good play between St Sia- well's United (Exeter) and Dawlish. Both teams were weak, particularly the South Devon contingent, who arrived in the city minus three of their players, and, only being able to secure two substitutes, were obliged to play one short. Although the visitors failed to score, they neglected to take ad- vantage of several chances offered them. During the first half the Dawlish goalkeeper took more steps than allowed for getting rid of the ball, and the referee (Mr. Harvey) allowed a penalty kick. Immediately Mr. Harvey gave the decision he became aware he was wrong, but was doubtful whether he could alter the decision once given, and insisted upon the penalty kick being taken. The mistake, however, was so obvious that the St Sidwell player entrusted with the ball deliberately kicked it outside. St Sidwell's combined well, Gilbert Bailey, and Winter being most conspicuous for good play. The Dawlish goalkeeper also played a good game, as also did Robins, Pedrick, and Cornelius for the losers.
