Teams:-
Artillery:
Goal, Steele (112th); backs, Smith (112th) and Hill (112th); half- backs, Salt (110th), Ritchie (112th), and McNaughton (110th); forwards, Ebery (110th), Myers (111th), Massey (110th), Hobson (111th), and Haddow (111th).
Exeter and District:
Goal, O'Neill (Dawlish); backs, Ashford St Sidwell's and Robins (Dawlish); half-backs, Muncey (Dawlish), Davidson (St. Sidwell's) and Gardener (Training College; forwards, Aldworth (Training College), Winter (St Sidwell's) A.Keech (Crediton), Kellaway (Training College), and Simmonds (Dawlish).
There was a fair attendance. The ground was in a very soft condition, and the players had some difficulty in keeping their feet. Exeter and District pressed at the com- mencement, but the soldiers soon drove them back, and Ebery skimmed the Exeter goal post. Exeter again attacked, and Keech, with a straight, swift shot, beat Steele in good style. But the Artillery were not to be denied, and Haddow, a few minutes later, brought the score level. The soldiers made the pace, and Hobson put them ahead. Making another effort, the District forward line broke away again, and kept the soldiers' backs busy. Keech suc- ceeded in piercing the defence, and again brought the scores level. Upon resuming, play was transferred to the Exeter end, and the soldiers were awarded a penalty kick, from which Hill notched a goal. Remsin- ing play was even. Half-time:
R.F.A., 3 goals: Exeter and District, 2 goals.
In the early stages of the second half the soldiers had matters their own way. From a free kick Hill passed to Myers, who smartly headed through a fourth goal for the Artillery. It now seemed as though the District were going to pieces, but a welcome change soon came. Keech broke through his opponents, dribbled to the goal's mouth, and scored a third goal for his side. The rest of the game, however, went all in favour of the Artillery.
Result:-
R.F.A., 4 goals.
Exeter and District, 3 goals.
