Dawlish v St Sidwell’s
East Devon Challenge Cup Semi Final

ST SIDWELL'S v. DAWLISH.

EAST DEVON CUP.

The County Ground being vacant to-day it was brought into use by SF Sidwell's United who had an account to settle with Dawlish if they meant to enter the final round of the East Devon Cup.

There was a fair sprinkling of spectators not a few of whom came from Dawlish, and, as is usual in cup matches, they did not fail to make their pressure felt. Dawlish were the first to get going but Ashford had no difficulty in repulsing them, and the Dawlish goal was then placed in jeopardy. The Saints' right got clean through and when a score seemed certain O'Neil was called upon to save a very feeble effort from Wells. It was a typical cup match and play veered from end to end. Dawlish had the advantage of a free kick close in, but SE Sidwell packed their goal and Eveleigh taking up the running gave to Winter. The latter sprinted along the left in fine style and finished with a centre which Thomas failed to reach. Dawlish were a very much alive team and the right wing gave Bailey a lot of trouble. Once when well beaten however, he recovered wonderfully well and cleared in the nick of time. Another visit to the Daw- lish end had no effective result the Saints' attack being very feeble, and the leather was soon careering to the other end where Robin- son had to save. Quicker than it takes to tell St Sidwelld had worked their way to the visitors' territory and Wells shied at goal, but his shot was intercepted. Just afterwards the same player had hard lines with an over-head effort goal which was a at trifle wide. The ground was very light and both sides found themselves baffled by the lively ball. Daw- lish, however, settled down to the conditions far better than the Saints' and in course of time got a footing within shooting range Robinson had first to fist away and then in saving from Reed he backed a little. Dawlish appealed for a goal on the ground that the ball was over the line but the referee was against them. Recovering themselves the Saints' made tracks for the Dawlish goal on which there was a regular fusitade, but the defence prevailed, though O'Neil saved somewhat luckily from Wells. Winter forced Woodley to concede a corner, which was fruitless and away at the other end Ashford was in difficulties, but managed to clear. Wells hit O'Neil in shooting from two yards range at a terrific pace-very hard lines indeed. On the Dawlish side Reed was conspicuous for some grand mid-field play, often beating Davidson. The next part of the programme was a capital run by Eveleigh, who heeled for Winter to centre, but the outside left was too late. In an attack on the Dawlish goal the Saints' appealed strongly for hands, but the appeal fell on deaf ears. Davidson shot well from long range, but was just wide.

Half-time: St Sidwells 0, Dawlish 0.

On the resumption Ashford cleared his lines well and the United left taking up the running Morgan followed up with an effort at goal, O'Neil punting away in the most ap proved style. Winter was knocked off the ball when centreing and again Sellick made a splendid shot at goal which was wide. St Sidwell's were granted a penalty kick for Cousins handling within the forbidden area and Wells took the kick but failed the leather going wide off the custodian's foot. Then for the first time Dawlish got away and, encouraged by a hurricane of applause from their supporters, made things hot for the United defence. They were repulsed and once more the United pressed. The right wing showed good combination and a score seemed imminent when Thomas failed to reach the ball in time to net. Hereabouts United had by far the bulk of the play but they could not penetrate the Dawlish defence. Indeed the efforts of the Saints to score were very feeble, the forwards making no allow- ance whatever for the lightness of the ball. Sellick and Wells exchanged places but all to no purpose. O'Neil, however, made rasping saves from Thomas and Morgan and it was he who Dawlish had to thank for a pointless draw.

Extra time was played in which Eveleigh scored for St. Sidwells' who won by one goal to nil.

Match Report 2
from Alex Wilson's unpublished research

A large number of spectators attended the County ground. Dawlish kicked off against the wind, The ball was sent down the field by Dawlish, but Davidson cleared, and Ashford headed out of the goalmouth from a Dawlish free kick, In a fastDawlish attack, white shot over the bar, and Robinson ran out of hisgoal and kicked away from Reed, At the other end Wells kicked into O'Nell's hands after receiving from Eveleigh, and in the next run, Winter narrowly missed the net, Half time arrived with the score sheet blank, play having been mostly even, and with both goals having narrow escapes, In the 2nd half Dawlish forced the play into Exeter's quarters, but seldom appeared likely to score. Davidson played a wonderful defensive game for the United, and also came close to scoring, O'Neill being fortunate to tip over the bar from one of his shots. Full time arrived with the scoreboard still showing a blank, and half an hours extra play was ordered, During the first portion of this extra time the Saints had by far the best of things, but still could not score. In the 2nd part, Eveleigh notched the winning goal for St Sidwells.
