The teams indulged in a friendly match on the field adjoining the Higher Barracks. The few spectators who watched the game could from the nature of the play easily percieve that this was the first game of the season for both teams. The conditions were by no means favourable for a good exhibition of the Association game. There was drizzling rain throughout the afternoon and the grass was exceedingly slippery. The marked lack of control over the leather was painfully apparent, The Saints were not at full strength, and the Regiment started off with the slope in their favour, they had little difficulty in confing the ball to the visitors territory. Soon after the start Robinson wastried, but saved well on two or three occasions, After some struggling play in midfield the Army made a pretty hot combined attack and Louchamn not che the first goal of the game, The visitors then showed more vigour, and mainly through the exertions of the Left wing a corner was forced. The Regiment's forwards got possession from the kick out and quickly transferred the game to the other end of the field, displaying some promising passing en route, Heath spoiled the foray by kicking too hard, With the pressure being continued, Burgoyne added a 2nd goal for the Devon Regiment a few minutes before the call of half time. Immediately on resuming the soldiers forced Robinson to handle several times and the onslaught culminated in Johnson putting through. A fast rush down the slope by the St Sidwell's forwards only resulted in a goal kick which the Devons improved on advantageously, the leather being forced through for the 4th time after a melee outside the St Soidwell goal. Uninteresting play followed, and the judgement of both elevens was hopelessly at fault, The Devons got unaccountably slack, and on three occasions towards the close of the game the visiting forwards took them unawares, and scored thrice through Eveleigh.
