HMS Britannia v St Sidwell's

22/11/1902

St Sidwell's played their finest game of the season against H.M.S. Britannia on Saturday. The Cadets gave a splendid show of forward combination, and only the weakness of their backs lost them the match by such a large score as 6 to 3. The inside left of the Ship's XI. was responsible for their three goals. The ship's backs were played out in the second half, and St. Sidwell's forwards quickly took the advantage of it. The secretary of the Saints writes: -"Our lot fairly enjoyed the game and we are proud to be be told we  are the only team to defeat them so heavily for the two past seasons, and this was only second defeat this season." The visitors forward line  played well, Eveleigh especially.  The goal and backs also played well

Report 2 (From the Gazette)

St Sidwell's journeyed to Dartmouth to play the cadets. The game was the best the United has yet played. The ship started the score. Hughes misjudged a kick, and the outside left gave to his partner, who beat Robinson by swift ft shot. The cadets again a vent away, their forwards passing splendidly. Then the Saints equalised from a penalty, Hughes scoring. Before half-time, however, by clever forward work, the cadets' inside left put his side ahead. On the change of ends the Saints improved, and Thomas quickly put his side level again, only, however, for the ship, by fine forward work, to score a third time, the inside left again beating Robinson. Within 20 minutes from time Eveleigh shot a splendid goal, and quickly followed with another goal. The Saints now had matters their own way. and three goals were added by Sellick. The cadets thus sustained the heaviest defeat for two seasons.

Score:- St. Sidwell's, 6 goals. H.M.S. Britannia, 3 goals.
