St Sidwell's v. Plymouth, St Matthew,
Friday 26th December 1902
at Mount Pleasant.
On their ground in Pinhoe-road, St Sidwel's United received the St Matthew's XI., of Ply- mouth, before an unusually large gate. The game was a fast one throughout, and neither side can be said to have had much of an advantage when half-time was called, St Sidwell's having scored twice and Matthew's once. During the second half, however, the Plymothians gave a poor display, and allowed their opponents to score a quartette of goals. while they themselves were unsuccessful in their efforts to improve their position. The visitors. no doubt. would have fared better had they brought with them a stronger goal-keeper. For St. Sidwell's, goals were notched by S. H. Thomas (2), H. Cole, E. Eveleigh, J. Sellick and W. Davis. The last-named and Eveleigh, the inside right and left respectively, played good games, while Sellick, the outside right, was in his best form. Robinson, the home custodian. saved some difficult shots, and Morgan played a bold game, although he made a few mistakes. The goal scored just before half-time by Thomas was an eye-opener. The player, obtaining Possession when three-quarters of the way down, maintained his control over the sphere until within a few yards of the corner post, when he shot with great confidence. Si Matthew's were, if anything, slightly inferior in their forward line to the home pack, who kept well in their places. The visiting backs defended with bold- ness, and at times played good individual games.
