St Sidwell's v Dawlish

Friernhay v St Sidwell's Reserves

SATURDAY 17th JANUARY 1903,

St Sidwell's v Dawlish

An Interesting Game.

St Sidwell's United played Dawlish at Mount Pleasant on Saturday, in the presence of a fairly large number of spectators. The slippery state of the ground, owing to the change in the weather, told against accurate football, but the players, for the most part, were not afraid to take the risks. The result was a fairly fast and interesting game. At the start the visitors had the slope in their favour, and it was not very long before one of their number scored. Assisted by this advantage, Dawlish played a rather strong game at the commencement, their forwards sending in some excellent shots, St Sidwell's began to press in return, but for a little while it looked as if the home eleven was going to have the best of the play. The Saints tried hard to level the draw, and it was not long before their efforts were succesful. Both sides were in very good condition, the de fence of the homesters being particularly equal to all demands on it, the backs playing very finely. After Si Sidwell's had scored, the for tune of the game seemed to turn, and the rest of the first half was very evenly contested, in spite of the fact that the visions were playing down-bill. When the teams crossed over, the scoring remained at one goal each.

Play was, if anything, of a more vigorous de- scription in the second half. It ruled faster, and the Dawlish goal-custodian was submitted to severe pressure. The home side undoubtedly had the best of matters now, and it was appar- ently all up" with the visitors. The latter attacked sometimes, but the home defence was not to be penetrated. I Sidwell's scored again and encouraged by their success, managed to put through another not long after.
The game thus ended:
St Sidwell's 3. Dawlish 1.

Report by LINESMAN

This makes St Sidwell's 18th victory. Considerable interest was taken in the match owing to the fact that the home Club possesses a good record. Victory to either side consequently meant not a little.

Scorers Sillick, Coles, Thomas

A second report from the Gazette

At Mount Pleasant, Exeter. Within a few minutes of the start the visitors, who were playing down hill, scored a fine goal. The Saints, aroused by this reverse, attacked hotly, and the seasiders were compelled to concede a corner. This was nicely taken by Coles, and Sellick scored. Dawlish sorely tested the home defence until half-time, and once put through, but the point was disallowed for "hands." The homesters held the upper hand after the interval, and Coles and Thomas scored each from a pass from the other.

Friernhay v St Sidwell's Reserves

The result of the meeting of these two teams wae that Bt Sidwell's Reserves were defeated for the first time this season. It must, however, be said that they played one short, their right back having to leave the field soon after the start. Friernhay beat them by six to two. Thomas (2). Stoneman (2), Paddon and Camble, scored for the winners, and West and Russell for the losers.
