SATURDAY 28th FEBRUARY 1903.
Wellington v St Sidwell's
Si Sidwell's United (Exeter) visited Wellington on Saturday, and were successful in winning the game by two goals to nil. Play throughout was of an exciting nature, and during the first half the Wellington men should have scored at least half-a-dozen goals, but the shooting was decidedly, off colour. Time after time capital passing led up to the visitors' goal, but the ball was either shot over the cross-bar or to the side. On changing over, St Sidwell's had matters pretty much their own way, Hughes and Thomas scoring after some capital play. Wellington failed to respond, and left the Exeter men winners by two goals to nil.
Just before the call of time a regrettable incident happened, and one which completely marred the pleasure of the game, for which an Exeter man was ordered off the field.
It should be added that the ground was heavy and slippery, and as a consequence, with a greasy ball, both teams were handicapped. The visitors' goal-keeper was little troubled throughout. The home custodian was in excellent form and saved his side several times.
