Tavistock v St Sidwell's
Saturday 7th March 1903
Tavistock v St Sidwell's
St Sidwell's journeyed to Tavistock to meet the home team, who are the Semi-Finalists for the Devon Cup. The visitors are evidently returning to their old form, as their display was worthy of note. The groand was in a very heavy condition, and Tavistock, playing with the wind. kept up a warm attack. But the visitors' defence was sound, and their forwarde were cheered for some fine play, and only the state of the ground prevented a score. Tavistock again tried to score, and eventually a penalty fell to them, but Robinson saved his side. Tavistock were not to be denied, and a fine run was made by their right wing, who centred well, and the home centre, being well up, scored. The Saints again stuck to their work, and they kept the homesters busy to keep their goal from being taken.
In the second half the home team scored twice very easily, owing to Robinson being badly hurt in the early part of the game. Only twenty minutes were left to play and the visitors very soon tired the homesters out, and from a fine round of passing Russell scored. Again the visitors went away, West making a fine run right up to within five yards of the goal, but lost a grand chance by shooting wide. The Sainte did not lose heart, and Sellick gave his side No. 2, and when time was called the result was three to two in favour of Tavistock.
Torquay and G.W.R. (Newton), at Torquay, re- sulted in a win for Cockington by two goals (scored by Brown and Bendell), to nil.
