Crediton YMCA v St Sidwell's United
Y.M.C.A. Team (goal), Snow; (backs), Maunder and Quick; (half-backs), Mesney, Miller, Brooks; (forwards), Lake, Setter, Tonkin, Leach, and Harris.
The above Association match, played on the ground of the former club, on Saturday last, resulted in a decisive win for the Saints by seven goals to nil. The ball was kicked off at 3:35 p.m. by the Y.M.C.A. President (the Rev. W. B. Smith-Dorrien, B.D.)
In the first half, matters seemed very one-sided, St. Sidwell's scoring no less than five goals. In the second, although everything was in their favour, they only managed to score twice. The game was very enjoyable throughout, there being a total absence of rough play. The passing and shooting of the Saints was beyond reproach, and called forth much praise from the spectators. In this half the Y.M.C.A. seemed to last better than their opponents, and had quite a lot of the play, having hard lines three or four times in not scoring. Their best men were Tonkin (capt.), Setter, Harris, Brooks, and Maunder. The latter, as right back, played a "clinking" game, defending well, and rarely missing his kick. Mr. Stoyle acted as referee.
The members of the Y.M.C.A. must not take their beating too much to heart, seeing that this was their first match. Even their opponents admitted, after the game, that this would, with a little more practice and steadiness, make a good team.
