St Sidwell's v Torquay United Reserves
At Pinhoe Road,
Torquay United Reserves journeyed to Exeter on Saturday with a very weak team to play St Sidwell's United, who held an unbeaten record. Although unsuccessful the United Reserves are to be congratulated on the result, for the balance in favour of the homesters was only a goal (2-1). The game cannot be described as good, for it was at times slow. The Exeter team pressed at the outset, and after 20 minutes' play succeeded in notching a goal by which they led at half time. The Torquinians played much better in the second moiety of the game and had as much of the play as the home eleven. SE Sidwell's scored from a forward rush, but the goal was a questionable one. After this the visitors were aroused, and severely bom- barded their opponent's goal. Peerman received on the half-way line and put in a powerful shot which the Exeter custodian failed to save. Just before time the Torquay team made one big effort, but it was unavailing, and St. Sidwell's were able to claim the game by the odd goal.
Tomney in goal was, as usual, safe. Reed and Craig (backs) were not so good, their kicking lacking powder. Wills was certainly the best of the balvee. Mann was slow and Long inexperienced. Peerman, who changed places with Long in the second half, performed splendidly, and scored his goal from a huge kick from the half-line. Forward, Aitken and Narracott were the pick. A. E. Durbin played well, but is out of his proper position. Matthews for once seemed slow, and was a trifle weak in kicking.
