SATURDAY 14th DECEMBER 1901
Dawlish v St Sidwell's

Friendly at Dawlish

Dawlish 2 St Sidwell's 2

Last Saturday's match at Dawish with St. Sidwell's. United was a disappointing one. In the first place, the bitterly cold wind took away the pleasure of the game, and secondly, the homesters ought to have accredited themselves with a win. Losing away and drawing at home against a Junior League combination is far below the form which has brought Dawlish silver medals during the past two seasons. The visitors, who had lost but one match in this their first season, brought their best team, and Dawlish was represented by--E. Knight; J. Lamacraft, F. Knapman; C. Leaman, S. Holman, M. Cousins; E. McCarthy, F. Hawking, H. Knight, H. Simmonds, and P. Dart. St Sidwell's had the advantage of the slope and gale in the first half, and scored twice-one from half-way. Simmonds, by an individual effort, goaled for Dawlish. Changing ends, the homesters soon equalised, Hawking putting through from a good burst by Knight, Simmonds, and Dart Play was confined to the visitors territory, but he Dawlishians relied too much on individual efforts; passing of any description was unknown, with the single exception of McCarthy, who played pretty football. Corners and goal kicks were the order but St. Sidwell's kicked out of play in a manner which entirely disgusted the spectators, and the match ended in a draw of 2 goals a piece.
