Torquay United Reserves v St Sidwell's
Torquay United had St Sidwell's from Exeter as their opponents on the Recreation Ground on Saturday last, and before a fair umber of spectators Winget started the game for the homeeters soon after three o'clock. For the first twenty minutes or so Torquay seemed quite incapable of holding their own, and the Exeter forwards were soon around the home goal and gave the Torquay defence many anxious moments, only to result in having their first goal scored against them when the game was quite young, Evane slipping whilst attempting to save. This reverse seemed to make little difference in the game of the home forwarde, who were playing at times miserably indeed, Narracott once missing an easy opening by shooting with little judgment. Owing to the the sterling play of Watson, Matthews was conspicuous on the left wing, but his centre was ignored, Narracott again being at fault.
Peerman next missed a penalty kick by shnoring hard into the visitors' custodian' hands, and the ball being put finally behind after a sharp tussle in front of the Exeter citadel. At length, Matthews got one of his centres to account, a visiting back heading through his own goal. With the scores level, play of an even nature took place till balf time caused a cessation of hostilities.
On the restart Reed was seen to advantage in his kicking, and Watson in his grand half back play; but though Torquay tried hard, Sh Sidwell's managed to get the lead, giving Evans no chance to save. Torquay after this seemed to give up the battle, playing far beneath their usual form. Winget played emartly at times, but individualiem won't win matches, and it was the absence of any com- bination that prevented the Reserves from scoring. St. Sid well'e in the meantime scored their third and fourth goals, and Winget with a beautiful effort got through for Torquay, the final scores reading
St. Sidwell's 4, United Reserves 2.
St Sidwell's were a long way the better team and the two goals difference does not count for the difference in the play between the two teams. Evans had no great chance to dis- tinguish himself and could not help the four goals scored against him. Reed was better than Craig at back. Whilst at half-back Watson easily was best of a hard-working trio. Of the forwarde Winget was the favourite-his goal being finely got-and Matthews also played gamely, but Narracott gave a very disappointing display-at times neglecting altogether to feed Cassavatti his partner.
