City Reserves v RMLI
Plymouth and District League

Plymouth and District League
City Reserves v R.M.L.I.
Wednesday, April 23rd

The Exeter City Reserves met the R.M.L.I. at St. James's Park this afternoon, in a Plymouth and District League match, the Marines having consented by arrangement to play both their League matches at Exeter this year. The City Reserves had a weak side out, and the Marines forced a corner on the left in the first half-minute. For some while they had rather the best of matters, but Brooksbank changed the venue of play, and nearly went right through on his own. Cooper subsequently tested Bray, and later on Chapman went to the feet of Macdonald and cleared in the nick of time. Play afterwards became very tame, and there was too much high aimless kicking. The Reserves had much the better of the play, but left much to be desired in the manner of their shooting. Three forwards once missed the ball when a ground centre was put across by W.Budd, of Alphington, who was being given a trial at outside-left. Ten minutes before half-time Reeves, in trying to divert a centre by Budd, put the ball through his own goal, and then the R.M.L.I. inside-left missed a good chance, and Nevin cleared. In the second half the City, with the sun in their favour, had nearly all the play. In one rush, however, Macdonald netted with an excellent shot which gave Chapman no chance, but to the sur prise of everyone he was ruled offside, and the point disallowed.

Brooksbank subsequently missed by a very narrow margin, and Cooper headed wide from Hunt's centre. Later on Bassett ran past all opposition after receiving the ball from a throw-in, beating Bray at close quarters. Cooper then burst through and scored the City's third goal, the Marines vainly protesting that he was offside. The City got the ball through a fourth time following a corner, but this point was disallowed on the grounds that Bray had been impeded, and five minutes from time Cooper scored the fourth with a good shot.

City 4, R.M.L.I. nil.

  • Plymouth Argyle beat Queen's Park Rangers at Home Park today, and now look almost certain to win the Championship of the Southern League.
