Bideford Beaten by City Reserves
VICTORY WAS NO FLUKE
Wednesday November 2nd 1977.
Sports Ground, Bideford, attendance 600.
BIDEFORD 1 EXETER CITY RESERVES 3.
Exeter City Reserves showed clearly on Wednesday night that they are now a force to be reckoned with in the Western League by becoming the first team to lower Bideford's colours this season.
And there was no fluke about their 3-1 win at the Sports Ground. In fact Exeter always looked the better side, and the mediocre display offered by Bideford was a bad omen for their important F.A.Cup 4th Qualifying Round game at home to Banbury, of the Southern League, on Saturday next. Bideford, who had gone thirteen games without defeat, never settled down against an exciting young Exeter side that played with ever-increasing confidence.
Fred Ingham, who has joined Exeter City from Dawlish Town, was not always in the game to advantage, but he improved when given more of the ball, and it was he who opened the scoring after 12 minutes. He also provided the opening from which Ireland got Exeter's next goal, after 34 minutes.
In the second half Roberts headed Exeter's third goal, and Wingate, the old City forward, replied for Bideford with 20 minutes to go. It is reported from St James's Park that next Saturday's match with Oxford United will start at 2.30 p.m. instead of 3 o'clock because of the threat of electricity power cuts.
