Falmouth Up In Seven Minutes

City Reserves Beaten at the Park

Saturday December 10th 1977.

St James's Park, attendance 1,000.

Exeter City Reserves 0-3 Falmouth Town

Even without their erstwhile star marksman Tony Kellow Falmouth Town proved, at St James's Park, that they can still score goals.

They took the lead in the seventh minute when Francis headed home a corner kick taken by Ferrett following a breakaway on the left wing. Until then play had been mostly confined to the other end, with the City mounting strong attacks which however failed to produce a clear scoring chance. Francis netted again in the next minute with a header from Brace's centre, but this time he was adjudged to be offside and the goal was disallowed. Howe saved from Govan and Ashe in turn following a free kick to the Cornishmen, and then Exeter began to make an impression. They went close to scoring in the 25th minute when Mitchell headed just over the bar following clever work by Ingham.

Both sides were endeavouring to play neat and constructive football, but as the pitch started to cut up play became more scrappy, and big kicking was the order of the day. Scott was sternly lectured by the referee (and his own team mates for persistently arguing after being heavily tackled by Ford.)

Exeter fought hard in the second half but were outclassed by a strong and experienced Falmouth team, for whom Brace and Govan scored their second and third goals in the last twenty minutes.
