Barnstaple Town
CITY RESERVES NET SIX AGAINST BARUM
A Thrashing for the Championship Contenders
Tuesday March 14th 1978.
St James's Park, attendance 550.
EXETER CITY RES. 6 BARNSTAPLE T. 0
David Jackson, a 19 year old forward of the Manchester United reserve and "A" teams, has joined Exeter City on a loan transfer until the end of the season, and he made his debut for the City Reserves in their match against Barnstaple Town, on Tuesday, at St James's Park.
The Exeter team included three players, Ingham, Weeks, and Hatch with Third Division experience, and it would have been four but for the fact that Jennings has gone down with influenza. With Baugh still not fit following an ankle injury, Steve Nute from Cornwall continued in goal.
Bruce Stuckey, who was brought out by Exeter City and transferred to Sunderland for a large fee, was at "No. 6" for Barum, but Chatterley, the old Aston Villa, Grimsby, and Torquay star was an absentee due to illness.
The free scoring Barnstaple team, who are chasing the Western League championship along with Falmouth Town and Bideford, were themselves given a lesson in the art of goalscoring and swamped by six of the best by the City Reserves.
Jackson opened the scoring after 15 minutes, and with Peter Hatch prompting his forwards in an immaculate display of endeavour and ability goals followed at regular intervals from Ford, Ireland, Weeks, White, and Ingham.
City Reserves: Nute; Smythe and Ford; Hatch, Mitchell, and Weeks; Forbes, White, Jackson, Ingham, and Ireland.
Barnstaple Town:- Robbins; Draper and Pope; Petersen, Brown, and Stuckey; Somerville, Clarke, Paddon, Burnell, and Coates.
