A young Exeter City Reserve side were beaten 4-0 at Dean Court last Tuesday afternoon by an AFC Bournemouth side featuring many of their first team squad.
Jayden Stockley opened the scoring for the Cherries after eight minutes before goals from Danny Hollands, a first-team regular, scored from distance to double the lead just after the half-hour.
And as the game reached first-half stoppage time trialist forward Christian Moulong gave them a 3-0 lead with an easy finish.
City put in an improved performance after the interval but conceded a fourth on 62 minutes when Danny Ings fired home.
But despite the disappointing scoreline coach Andy Tillson believes the youngsters can take plenty from the game, the first of their Totesport.com Combination League.
"We did struggle in the first half with a team who hadn't played for a while," he said.
"Lots of them are in that stage of their careers between the youth team and the first team and it probably showed at times against a really experienced with, I think, seven first team players playing.
"They had that extra know-how but there was certainly no lack of effort from our team and they worked really hard.
"There is plenty to build on. Winning is great but sometimes you learn more from the defeat."
Joe Heath and Artur Krysiak, both 21, and 24-year-old Ben Watson were the old heads in City's line-up and Andy paid tribute to the way the trio helped the teenagers.
"Ben, Joe and Artur worked really well with the young boys both encouraging them during the game and after full time as well," he said. "I was really pleased with their attitude."
"It was great for Under 18 players like Josh Searle and Roger Ingham to get some game time as well and a bit more experience. It will have done them the world of good."
City's line-up: Krysiak, Bennett, Furzer, Heath, Keats, Western, (Searle) Dawson, Frear, Shephard, (Ingham), Watson, Bassett,
City's Reserves are in action next on Tuesday September 7th when Torquay United are the visitors to The Park
