Biographical Text

Hampshire-born defender Angus MacDonald joined Exeter City in February 2025 from Aberdeen. At Torquay United earlier in his career, he had gone on to play for Barnsley, Hull City, Rotherham United and Swindon Town whilst overcoming serious illness.

Angus was part of Reading’s academy set-up when at school and became a scholar/trainee with the Berkshire club in 2009. Capped for England at under-16 and under-19 level he became a professional in 2011 and soon gained experience playing on loan for Basingstoke Town and Salisbury City.  A third loan to Torquay United took place in 2012, when he made his Football League debut, and a similar arrangement followed with AFC Wimbledon prior to a quick return to Plainmoor along the same lines later in 2012/13.

Leaving Reading in 2013 at the age of twenty without appearing for the first team, he spent a season with Salisbury City before eventually signing on a permanent basis for the now non-league Torquay United where he became captain under the stewardship of future Grecians assistant-manager Kevin Nicholson. Making his name at Plainmoor, Angus moved to Barnsley in 2016 where he was to accumulate fifty league appearances and skipper the side ahead of remaining in the Championship with a January 2018 switch to Hull City.

Quickly establishing himself on Humberside, Angus suffered a dislocated shoulder early in the 2018/19 campaign and subsequently developed deep vein thrombosis. Then, having not played since August 2018, he was diagnosed with the early stages of bowel cancer twelve months later. Making a recovery, Angus did not finally play for the first-team again until June 2020 when football resumed after the first COVID lockdown. With a dispute brewing between Barnsley and Hull over the extent to which the selling club knew of Angus’s various medical issues, he was soon on the move to Rotherham United in August 2020 for whom he was to make around fifty league and cup appearances over the following two seasons.

Having now had six years in Yorkshire, Angus returned closer to his Hampshire roots with a six-month spell at Swindon Town prior to a move in the direction of his ancestry when he joined Aberdeen in January 2023. Spending two years in the Granite City, Angus captained the side on occasions and scored memorable goals in Europe against HJK Helsinki and in a Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic. Notching around fifty appearances for the Dons in all competitions - but just seven during 2024/25 - the 32-year-old Angus played his last game for the club against Hibernian on 5 January 2025 and agreed terms with Exeter City until the end of the season on transfer deadline day a month later.  He subsequently made his debut eight days later in the FA Cup 4th round tie against Nottingham Forest and missed a penalty in the shoot-out at the end of the 2-2 draw but was on target when he scored his first goal for City in his seventh game for the club against Mansfield Town on 11 March 2025.
