Mansfield v Exeter City
FOLEY DEPUTISES FOR WHITNALL
EXETER CITY make one change for their match at Mansfield today. Theo Foley comes in at right-back for Brian Whitnall, who has a swollen ankle. Keith Harvey was fit enough to play, but, said manager Glen Wilson, "Alvan Williams played so well at centre-half last week it would not be fair to drop him."
EXETER GIVE MANSFIELD RUN AROUND
Conditions were treacherous and mud patches dotted the pitch at Field Mill, sunshine having followed heavy frost. Mansfield were hoping to complete a double over their fellow strugglers in the fourth division "basement."
MANSFIELD.-Wyllie: Toon, Bradley; Williams (B.), Phillips, Coates: Wragg, Delapenha. Wagstaff, Fitzsimons, Stringfellow.
EXETER. - Jones; Foley, McDonald; Wilson. Williams (A.), Thompson, Donaldson, Rees. Jenkins, Carter. Dale. Referee.-C. H. Rogers (Greenford).
After 4 minutes Wagstaff drove a Delapenha pass into the net but he was given off-side. During continued Exeter pressure their skipper Wilson sent a power drive inches over and then thumped the ball against the bar from 30 yards range. An offside decision brought Mansfield's hard pressed defence relief. After 19 minutes Jenkins weaved past two defenders on the right and squared the ball to CARTER, who netted from close range, but in six minutes Mansfield were on level terms Eire international FITZSIMONS scoring after a de- lightful move which he started and in which Wagstaff and Stringfellow also figured. Only five minutes had elapsed when DONALDSON shot Exeter's second goal, his left foot meeting a centre from Dale and leaving the diving Wyllie helpless. Exeter's speed and accurate passing had the home defence flustered and the alert Wyllie was soon in action again, pulling down a dangerous centre from Jenkins.
CARTER AGAIN
Two minutes before half- time CARTER headed another goal for the visitors after Dale had tricked two defenders "on a sixpence" and centred.
Half-time: - Mansfield 1 Exeter 3
Mansfield showed more method on the resumption but their attack could make little progress against the Exeter defenders. To the cheers of the crowd Mansfield went all-out for a goal. Fitzsimons raced through but was robbed by Rees. Wag- staff missed a good chance, and Fitzsimons shot into the side net when a goal seemed certain. Mansfield were now dominating the play, but the minutes were ticking away. After 66 minutes, however, FITZSIMONS made a lightning recovery after his first shot had been blocked by the Exeter 'keeper and scored. Exeter's skipper, Wilson, was injured and while he was on the touch line Wagstaff was fouled and the referee awarded Mansfield a penalty, but Delapenha put the spot kick over the bar. Close on time, Wragg did get the ball in the net from a Delaphena corner kick but for the second time in the game. Mansfield had a goal disallowed.
Result:-
Mansfield Town 2-3 Exeter City
