Display Cabinet 4 – Players and Managers
This sheet relates to items in a single shelf display cabinet on the theme of Exeter City players and managers. It also includes a couple of very early items – a Supporters Club card from 1912 and a season ticket from 1920/1.

Left to right:
1. Golden boot awarded to Exeter City’s Tony Kellow for being leading Division 3 goalscorer in 1980/81. Tony scored 33 League and Cup goals. He was the highest scorer in all four English top divisions – ahead of other divisional leads - Steve Archibald (Spurs), David Cross (West Ham) and Robbie Cooke (Peterborough). In fact Tony was second highest scorer in the whole of Europe – only Georgi Plovdiv from the Bulgarian Parva Liga scored more.
2. Tony Kellow signed photo. Tony is Exeter’s record goalscorer. He played in 388 games for Exeter scoring 151 goals over three spells with the Club. He was inducted in the club’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

5. Photo of the memorial to Tony Kellow in Budock Water near Falmouth. Tony was a proud Cornishman. He lived in the village at the time of his death in 2011.

7. Arthur Chadwick England Cap. Arthur was Exeter’s first professional manager appointed in 1908 when Exeter turned professional and joined the Southern League. He was a player/manager to start with and went on to become our longest serving manager; only stepping down in 1922. Arthur previously had a successful playing career as a half back especially with Southampton. He played in the 1900 Cup Final and won 2 England Caps. The cap on display, donated by the Chadwick family, was for an appearance in an England trial match, South v North on 7 March 1900. Arthur scored in a 4-4 draw. It is the oldest item in our museum collection.
8. Gary Caldwell Scotland Cap. Gary joined Exeter City as manager in 2022. His playing career (a centre back) included Celtic and Wigan Athletic winning trophies at both. Gary played 55 times for Scotland. This cap was from a world Cup Qualifier versus Norway on 11 October 2008. Played at Hampden Park in front of 51,300 it finished as a 0-0 draw.
9. Book: ‘Cliff Bastin Remembers’ first published in 1950. Signed by Bastin. Plus cigarette cards featuring Cliff Bastin. Cliff Bastin was an outstanding schoolboy player who first played for Exeter City Reserves as a 15 year old and for the Senior team aged just 16 years and one month away at Coventry in 1928. It was over eight decades later before his record as the youngest ever Exeter player was broken by Ethan Ampadu. Bastinplayed just 17 games for Exeter, scoring 6 goals. He was transferred to Arsenal in 1929 where he became a legend scoring 178 goals in 395 games. He played for England 21 times, scoring 12 goals.

11. Signed photos of Cliff Bastin and Harold Blackmore. Blackmore, born in Silverton, played 77 games for Exeter scoring 47 goals. He was transferred to Bolton Wanderers in 1927 and scored one of the goals as Bolton won the FA Cup in 1929 against Portsmouth.
12. Division 3 South Cup winner’s medal. In 1934 Exeter City won their first ever professional trophy – the Football League Division 3 South Cup. After a cup run that included defeating Crystal Palace 11-6, Exeter beat Torquay United 1-0 in the final at Home Park. The goalscorer was Stan Hurst and his family have loaned his winner’s medal to the museum for display.
13. Football Conference runners up medal 2007. This was from Exeter City’s first ever appearance at Wembley. Morecambe won 2-1 in this play off final. Donated by Chris Todd who played for Exeter in the game.
14. FA Tour of Canada medal. Happy Houghton was selected for this tour in 1931. It was the nearest thing to a full international call up. Happy played 223 times for Exeter scoring 83 goals between 1928 and 1934 including the away goal at Sunderland in the FA Cup Quarter Final in 1931. The FA XI played 17 games in Canada and won every one. Houghton played in 8 of the matches and scored 9 goals. The medal has ‘Football Association Canadian Tour 1931’ inscribed on the reverse. It is on loan to the museum from the Houghton family.
15. Exeter City Supporters Club Membership card 1912. The club was formed that year.
16. Season ticket 1920-1. A rare survivor from Exeter City’s first season as a Football League club. This was a ground admission ticket and cost £1 7s 6p. It was donated by the holder’s family.
