Biographical Text
David Wells, a goalkeeper previously with Bournemouth, came on as a replacement for Danny Potter in the pre-season friendly against Panionios in July 1998.
Then aged twenty, the Portsmouth-born 'keeper was to join League of Wales club Barry after his brief trial with Exeter City. Subsequently having a spell with Dorchester Town, he then moved to Northern Ireland and played for a string of clubs including Cliftonville, Portadown, Newry and Dungannon.
Having started as a trainee with Bournemouth, he had made a solitary league appearance for the Cherries before arriving at St James' Park. Qualifying for Northern Ireland through his parents, David won representative honours at under-18 and under-21 level.
