Display Cabinet 9 – Cup runs
This sheet relates to a double fronted three shelf cabinet above display cabinet 4. Display cabinet 7 is on the left hand side and display cabinet 9 is on the right. The theme of these cabinets is Exeter City cup runs including FA Cup, EFL Cup and the EFL trophy.
Above both display cabinets: ‘Exeter City Welcome to Old Trafford’ sign. Rescued by fans and brought back to Exeter after the FA Cup third round match. City was a non league team at that point but held Premier League Manchester United to a 0-0 draw on Saturday 8 January 2005. The attendance was 67,551.

Top shelf (9.1)
14. Match ball from Exeter City v Luton Town EFL Cup 3rdround game on Tuesday 26 September 2023. Signed by Demitri Mitchell who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win for Exeter. Attendance 7360 at St James Park. This was the first time for 42 years that Exeter City had beaten a top division team in a competitive game. The previous one was against Leicester City (see match ball – number 16). Plus match programme.
15. Match ball from Exeter City v Port Vale match in Football League Trophy Area Final second leg at St James Park on 21 April 1993. Plus match programme. This was the first area final reached by Exeter with the prize a final at Wembley. A 1-1 draw meant that Port Vale went through on aggregate. Exeter has reached the penultimate round on 4 occasions but have yet to win through to a Wembley Final.
16. Match ball from Exeter City v Leicester City FA cup 4thround replay on 28 January 1981 at St James Park. Plusmatch programme. Tony Kellow scored a hattrick as City beat their top division opponents 3-1 in front of a crowd of 15,268. Exeter went on to knock out Newcastle United before losing at Tottenham (see 12).
Middle shelf (9.2)
17. Framed autographs from Exeter City’s first great cup run which ended with two Quarter Final games against Sunderland in 1931. In the first game away at Roker Park on 28 February a crowd of 51,642 saw a 1-1 draw. The replay took place at St James Park, Exeter on 4 March with the visitors winning by 4-2 in front of Exeter’s all time record attendance of 20,984. As the replay took place after the draw for the next round this was the only time in Exeter’s history that our name was in the hat for the semi final draw.

20. ITV commentators’ notes from Exeter City v Nottingham Forest FA Cup 4th round match on 11 February 2025 at St James Park. Attendance: 8330. Josh Magennis scored twice for Exeter in a 2-2 draw. Forest won on penalties.

Bottom shelf (9.3)
22. Sunday Independent newspaper reporting on Exeter City’s FA Cup 2nd round 2-1 win away at Bristol City on 7 December 1985. Goals by Tony Kellow and Alan Crawford secured a third round away tie with top division Everton. Everton won 1-0.

25. Three cup rosettes. Exeter wore green away to Liverpool in the Football League Cup 4th round on 30 October 1979 at Anfield. Liverpool won 2-0. The middle rosette is annotated on the back stating it was worn in Exeter City’s 3rd round FA Cup tie with European champions Manchester United on 4 January 1969. Alan Banks gave City the lead before United came back to win 3-1. Attendance 18,500.

27. Five city related wine bottles. These include two marked ‘Grecian Goddess’ from Exeter’s narrow loss to Aston Villa in a home FA Cup 3rd round tie on 8 January 1994. There is also the ‘Three amigos’ bottle signed byTottenham Hotspur legends Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa and Steve Perryman (later Director of Football at Exeter City) who attended a social event at Exeter City in 2015. Ricky Villa scored one of the FA Cup’s most memorable goals to win the 1981 FA Cup Final replay 3-2 against Manchester City.
28. Guest lounge wrist band for Liverpool v Exeter City FA Cup 3rd round replay at Anfield on Wednesday 20 January 2016. Exeter had gained the replay after holding Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in the first game at St James Park on 8 January. Liverpool won the replay 3-0 in front of a crowd of 43,292.
