2026 Dan Green (caretaker)
Biographical Text
A former Exeter City youth-team player, Dan Green played for a number of non-league clubs before returning to Exeter City in a coaching capacity. He subsequently took on roles at Aston Villa and Rotherham United before returning to Exeter. By then a highly-regarded and fully-qualified coach, he took temporary charge of City's first-team in February 2026 following the departure of Gary Caldwell thereby becoming the first Exeter-born individual to take the position in the professional era.
After appearing for City's under-18s between 2008 and 2010, Dan left the club at the age of eighteen to play for Falmouth Town for two seasons before featuring for Truro City between 2012 and 2016 as well as having a spell with Dorchester Town. Moving into coaching at a relatively early stage, he soon took up the position of under-18s coach back at Exeter City and played a role in the development of players such as Ethan Ampadu, Jack Sparkes and Archie Collins. Following the appointment of Matt Taylor as City's manager in 2018, Dan was put in charge of the club's under-23s team who he guided towards qualification for the Under-23 Premier League Cup in the 2018/19 season.

Increasingly working with the first-team squad during the 2021/22 promotion season, Dan subsequently left the Grecians in August 2022 to join Aston Villa as an under-21 coach before moving to Rotherham United in June 2023 as first-team strategic development coach. Working once again with Matt Taylor, Dan remained with the Millers after Taylor's dismissal in November 2023 until returning to Exeter City initially as an individual player development phase coach in the summer of 2024 before taking on first-team duties and looking after the under-21s in the Premier League Cup.
Having received his UEFA Pro-Licence in June 2025, Dan took temporary charge of the first-team (assisted by Kevin Nicholson) in February 2026 following the departure of Gary Caldwell. After an initial 1-1 draw against Wycombe Wnaderers, his second game - a draw at Peterborough United - featured an eight-minute hat-trick from Jayden Wareham. Remaining at the helm for the subsequent game against Bolton Wanderers, Dan stepped aside for the return of Matt Taylor in early March 2026 with the curiosity that all five City goals on his watch had been scored by Jayden Wareham.
