Michael McBride was appointed as Exeter City’s head physiotherapist at the behest of Gary Caldwell in February 2023.

Michael had previously worked with Gary Caldwell at Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield in addition to a long association with the Scottish national team. A graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University, he gained additional qualifications in sports medicine and worked in both the NHS and private practice as well as having spells with Edinburgh rugby and Scunthorpe United.  

Michael drew the attention of The Sun’s website in February 2026 when it became apparent that he had inadvertently shared news of Gary Caldwell’s departure on the fitness app Strava. Recording details of a pre-match 5km run, he had included the words: “Northampton (H) last one with Gary and Dave (Perkins)”.
