Bedford, Dick

Dick Bedford served Exeter City in a number of capacities between 1992 and 2017 often on a voluntary basis.

Having started coaching in 1992 when his son's cub scouts entered a competition, Dick ran a primary school team in Cullompton where he encountered former City player Steve Neville who was then working on the football in the community programme. With Eamonn Dolan soon taking the community role, Dick was invited to help with coaching and continued to do so in the centre of excellence - the forerunner to the later academy set-up.

Often running evening sessions using the facilities of the Royal Marines at Lympstone, Dick enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Eamonn Dolan and - when the latter took charge of the first-team - Dick was given responsibility for the kit together with the players' pre-match warm-up.

Also stand-in physiotherapist on occasions, Dick even had twenty minutes in charge of the team as City rode out a 2-1 win in the absence of the sent-off Dolan and the unavailable Steve Perryman.

Involved at the time of the two games against Manchester United in 2005, Dick later coached the Exeter City Ability Counts team and the England Blind team. Eventually stepping back from coaching, he became the club’s welfare officer which involved carrying out criminal records checks on new staff, attending meetings with the police and social services and dealing with all manner of day-to-day issues.
