McCauley, Dan

Dan McCauley from near Tiverton, a future owner of Plymouth Argyle, was briefly on the board of Exeter City between 1983 and 1984 as he made an unsuccessful bid to buy the club.

Born in 1936 Mr McCauley ran Rotolok, an engineering business based in Bampton, and at various times made attempts to buy Exeter City and Torquay United where he became one of the club’s first shirt sponsors. After joining the St James’ Park board, he launched a bid to buy City and distributed Christmas cards at the Boxing Day 1984 game against Torquay outlining his plans for the Grecians.

An often controversial figure, he eventually succeeded in buying a football club when he took control of Plymouth Argyle in 1991 and remained at the Home Park helm until 2001. During his time with the Pilgrims he appointed Neil Warnock and Paul Sturrock and also purchased Drake’s Island in Plymouth Sound.

Dan McCauley died in March 2020 aged eighty-four.
