Newman, George
George Newman was the conductor of the Exeter City Military Band which entertained spectators at St James’ Park from shortly after the First World War through until the 1930s.
Renditions included Widecombe Fair; Felix Kept on Walking; There’s a Good Time Coming; Be It Ever So Far Away; City of Laughter, City of Tears and - in honour of returning former players - Auld Lang Syne.
There was a minor furore after the game against Reading in October 1934 when the club used a public address system for the first time and dispensed with the band’s services.
