Stile, J H H
Mr J H H Stile was the building contractor, working to the designs of architect J Archibald Lucas, responsible for the 1911 expansion of St James’ Park and construction of what was to become the Big Bank.
James Henry Hawker Stile was born in Exeter in 1874 and was a prominent freemason in the city and a noted local golfer. His business, based in Summerland Street, was hired for the work to be undertaken in 1911 following Henry Duke MP’s donation of land to the club. Ironically he was later involved in an unsuccessful winding up order against the club in 1935.
Mr Stile died in 1939 at the age of sixty-five.
