Yates, Alistair

Alistair Yates was involved in the establishment of the Exeter City Supporters Trust in 2000.

An Exeter City supporter since the mid-1970s he had been involved in establishing a northern supporters' group when living in Warrington. Now living in the South East, and an early member of the GNet internet group, Alistair had started to show an interest in the work of Supporters Direct and the formation of supporters' trusts. With City struggling towards the end of Ivor Doble's active involvement in Exeter City, and the club seeking the help of supporters and sponsors to raise money to buy Gary Alexander, Alistair produced a twelve-page paper proposing the formation of a trust to help fund transfers at a time when a number of other supporters were generating ideas about greater supporter participation. A meeting with the club followed with the proposal that such as trust could help top-up player wages, fund the youth scheme, support the purchase of the St James' Park School building and invest in a youth hostel.

As the club board showed interest only in accepting any monies raised, but not in giving any say to those who had made the effort, the proposal fell by the wayside. The consensus amongst those involved was to push towards the establishment of a supporters' trust with somewhat wider objectives. In May 2000 Alistair Yates was one of three signatories to a bank account set up in the name of the Exeter City AFC Supporters Trust Society.

Mr Yates remained involved with the governance of the trust for another year or so as membership grew to around 250. He was later to stand for election to the trust's board on several occasions during the 2020s.
