Finn, Jim

Referee Jim Finn collapsed and died during the game between Exeter City and Stockport County in September 1972. The game was played to its conclusion.

Mr Finn from Chigwell Row in Essex complained of chest pains at half-time but carried on until the sixtieth minute when he collapsed. He was carried off on a stretcher with one of the 'linesmen' taking over in the middle whilst the line was ran by Bill Dymond, a local official who had been watching the game.

Jim Finn's death was announced at the final whistle and the crowd was asked to leave in silence. By later standards the tragedy appears to have drawn remarkably little press attention.

Almost exactly fifty years later Mr Finn's daughter Jayne (pictured) and her daughter Amy, attended the game between City and Burton Albion as guests of the club. They met the match officials as part of their visit.

James Albert Finn was thirty-nine at the time of his death. He is remembered for once having his car rocked by supporters after a game at Millwall and for booking Jimmy Greaves in a reserve game that drew a large crowd following the England player being dropped by Spurs.
