Wayne had represented Gloucestershire schools and arrived at the same time as Steven Mills, another schoolboy from Gloucester. He later made his first-team debut for Gloucester City at the age of sixteen and, in addition to being being a reserve-team player for Southern League Cheltenham Town, also turned out for a number of Helllenic League clubs.

As a school-age pupil from beyond the immediate area he is likely only to have trained with Exeter City during the school holidays.
