Biographical Text
Gary Peters was manager of Exeter City when the club was relegated from the Football League in 2003. Only recently appointed, results improved under his guidance although it was too late save the club from its fate. Previously manager of Preston North End, he was later in charge of Shrewsbury Town.
Aged forty-eight at the time of his arrival at St James' Park, Gary's playing career had amounted to over 400 games with more than half of those coming from two spells with Reading. Having been a youth player with Aldershot, he also played for Fulham (two spells) and Wimbledon with a brief return to Aldershot along the way.
Entering management with Preston North End in 1994, he remained in the Deepdale hot seat for four years before later returning to run the club's centre of excellence in the days before it became an academy. Made redundant from that role, he was available when the call came from Exeter City in February 2003.
Following John Cornforth, Eamonn Dolan (caretaker) and Neil McNab, he was City's fourth manager of the only campaign under control of John Russell and Mike Lewis. With two teams set to be relegated from the Football League for the first time, Mr Peters faced a daunting challenge from the outset and - although the team only lost three of his thirteen games in charge - City were relegated on the final day of the seasons when other results went the wrong way. As the season of chaos moved towards its conclusion on and off the pitch, he resigned a few days later and was away from football management until joining Shrewsbury Town eighteen months later.
Spending four years with the Shropshire club, he later moved down the road to become director of football at Hereford United.
