John studied and taught at the University of Exeter in the 1970s before joining the National Coal Board history project. He subsequently worked for the Coal Authority and NHS together with engaging in educational research and lecturing in economic history. An Honorary Fellow of the University of Exeter, he became known as an authority on steam power and Devon's industrial history.
