Gary Norton became an Exeter City stadium tour guide shortly after retiring in 2022. As a young supporter he had the distinction of seeing the Grecians score seven on only his third visit to St James’ Park.

Exeter-born Gary watched his first game at St James’ Park - a 4-3 reverse against Grimsby Town - in August 1971 when John Wingate (2) and Tony Morrin were the scorers. With a possibly unique claim to seeing the Grecians score seven in only his third game  - a 7-1 victory over Barrow (Binney 2, Parker, Neale, Morrin, Banks and an own goal) - Gary was soon hooked. Having witnessed two great City goalscorers in that Barrow game, it was only a matter of a few seasons before Tony Kellow became Gary’s favourite player. 

After growing up in Topsham, Gary moved down the estuary to Exmouth upon getting married. Spending the best part of forty years in the property industry, he retired in 2022 and decided to keep busy through volunteering for the  Exmouth Foodbank and the hospital car service.             

Around the same time Gary also started to conduct tours on behalf of the Exeter City Supporters' Trust as part of a team of volunteer guides. Enjoying his new role enormously he took particular pleasure, remembering his Topsham roots, when reminding visitors to the ground of the part played by Topsham salmon fisherman Dick Pym (Exeter City, Bolton Wanderers and England) in the history of the club.
