Mick Channon, who chiefly played for Southampton and England in a twenty-year career between the 1960s and 1980s, falls into the category of those ‘who might have played for Exeter City’. His son, Mick junior, was on Exeter City’s books as a youth player during the early 1990s.
Mick Channon joined Southampton from school in 1964 and made his first-team debut two years later. Remaining at the Dell until 1977, he made 392 league appearances for the club (157 league goals) during his initial spell with the club and won the first of his forty-six England caps in 1972. Scoring twenty-one international goals, he was a member of Southampton's 1976 FA Cup winning side and was fortunate to have enjoyed a sell-out testimonial game a few days after the team's success.Leaving for Manchester City in 1977, he later returned to Southampton for a further 119 league games (twenty-eight goals) ahead of spells with Newcastle United, Bristol Rovers and Norwich City where he won the League Cup.
According to Trina Lake of the Express and Echo, Exeter City made a bid to sign Mick in August 1985 after he had left Norwich. After visiting St James' Park, the player - by then thirty-six - decided to sign for Portsmouth where he made just over thirty league appearances before retiring in 1986.
Later becoming a successful race horse trainer, Mick continued his friendship with his former Southampton and England team mate Alan Ball who had been his manager at Portsmouth. With Ball set to be manager of Exeter City between 1991 and 1994, it was perhaps no surprise that Mick's son - Mick junior - attempted to become a professional footballer under Alan Ball's guidance at Exeter City in the early 1990s.
