Biographical Text

Arthur Milton, almost certainly destined to be the last male to play both cricket and football for England, appeared for Bristol City against Exeter City in 1955 shortly before giving up football to concentrate on cricket.

A Bristolian, Arthur Milton had just turned twenty-seven when he took part in promotion-chasing Bristol City's 1-0 victory at St James' Park in March 1955. Having recently signed from Arsenal, it was one of just fourteen league matches he played for the Robins before concentrating on his Gloucestershire cricket career. An England football international, he was yet to play international cricket although he had already acted as England's twelfth man on occasions.

Joining Arsenal immediately after the war, his progress at Highbury was interrupted by National Service and he did not make his league debut until March 1951. By contrast he had been playing first-class cricket for Gloucestershire since 1948. The oddity of his sporting career was his appearance on the right-wing for England against Austria in November 1951 after just a dozen league games. It proved to be his only cap and he was eventually to lose his first-team place at Arsenal prompting his departure to Bristol City in 1955 after seventy-five league games for the Gunners.

Arthur's decision to give up football soon paid dividends as he was to play in six test matches for England between 1958 and 1959 whilst enjoying a career with his home county that lasted until 1974. He died in Bristol aged seventy-nine in April 2007 and was the twelfth player to appear for England in both cricket and football.
