Academy side crowned South West champions
We are delighted to announce that Exeter City’s under-18s have been crowned league champions of the Youth Alliance South West division.
The news follows the ruling of Hereford United’s expulsion from the competition following a persistent breach of Rule 6.2; all of the Bulls’ records have been expunged.  The final league table sees Exeter sitting on top of the pile, ahead of Bristol Rovers on goal difference.
Exeter also finished as top goal-scorers in the division with 40 goals across their 16 games, and netted five times on four occasions – the last game of the season on Saturday 12th April saw Ollie Watkins grab a hat-trick in a 5-1 win away at Newport.  On Monday the forward was offered a professional contract with City, along with defender Connor Riley-Lowe and midfielder Jason Pope who also finish their apprenticeships this summer.
The under-18s will be presented to the crowd at half-time at Exeter City’s final home game of the 2013/14 season against Scunthorpe United.  We invite all fans to come and show their appreciation of this fantastic achievement.

Academy Manager passes congratulations on title victory

Exeter City’s Academy Manager Simon Hayward was quick to pass his congratulations to the players and non-playing staff involved in the club’s under-18 side, following the news of their Youth Alliance South West championship victory.
Under the tutelage of under-18 coach Lee Skyrme, the young Grecians finished ahead of the rest of the bunch, narrowly pipping Bristol Rovers on goal-difference.
It caps a good weekend for the Academy at the Cat & Fiddle, after the news on Monday that a further three players from the under-18 side will link up with the first-team in 2014/15following the completion of their two-year apprenticeship.
For Hayward, that is the most telling factor and the league title is a by-product of a successful season of development for the youngsters.
“Lee has done a fantastic job with a talented group of boys this year since arriving last summer,” said Hayward.  “I extend my congratulations to Lee and all of the players for their superb efforts, as well as Academy physio Cian O’Doherty for his fantastic work with the lads across the season.
“I always stress that the most important result for Academy age-groups isn’t the league table or the match result – it’s about producing players for the first-team.
“So the real value in Lee’s work this year was on Monday night when a further three players were offered professional contracts, in addition to Matt Jay who had signed a deal back in December.
“Lee has proven himself to be an ideal fit to coach the under-18 group at this club – he has put more of his care and attention into the performance and development of the boys as individuals, and not concerned himself too closely with the match results – and the upshot of that is that this is the first year that we have won the league!
“When you try to develop young players and do things the right way, the results will look after themselves.  So to be crowned as champions is a fitting reward for the under-18s and everyone associated.”
