First Black Infantry Officer

In 1917 Walter was trained and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, despite the fact that the Manual of Military Law stated that only men of 'pure European descent could be commissioned as officers. As a result Walter Tull became the first infantry officer of black heritage in the British Army.

Tull was known for his "Gallantry and Coolness" - Major-General Sydney Lawford
