1985 Byron Snell
Biographical Text
Byron Snell would have been one of Exeter City's youngest chairmen when he briefly held the position during the mid-1980s. He later left the club for a second time amidst controversy.
Mr Snell was forty when he joined the board in February 1984 at the same time as Ivor Doble. Exeter-born, he acted as chairman during 1985 between Clifford Hill stepping down and the appointment of the long-serving Mr Doble.
Very little is known about his time at the helm - save for him being listed as chairman in programmes between January and November 1985 - and he left the club immediately afterwards for what was later cited as 'personal reasons'.
The owner of heating engineering, plumbing and bathroom businesses in Exeter, he returned to the board in February 1987 and served until March 1990 when he - and fellow director Archie Gooch (a one-time chairman of Bristol City) - were voted off the board at an extraordinary general meeting amidst allegatons of financial mismanagement, a FA investigation regarding counter-allegations and a dispute with City chair Ivor Doble.
