In 1934 City became the inaugural winners of the Third Division South Cup, defeating Torquay United 1-0 at Home Park thanks to a goal from Stan Hurst. While Hurst scored that decisive goal, it was Fred Whitlow who had wowed the crowds in previous games, scoring six goals in an 11-6 win against Crystal Palace on the way to the final.
