ECFC Museum | Have You Ever Played Brazil?
‘Have you ever played Brazil’ is a chant that
has regularly been sung by fans of ECFC,
due to the fact that in the summer of 1914 we
were the first team ever to play against the
nation that would go on to appear at every
World Cup tournament so far, and lift the
trophy a record five-times.
This Heritage Lottery Funded exhibition,
produced by Keira Gauld in collaboration with
ECFC and the ECFC Supporters Trust in 2014,
was designed to mark the centenary of the
game, and reveals the circumstances that led to
this historic match, the eventful story of Exeter’s
tour of South America, and the on-going
connection that exists between the two teams.
While other football clubs may have won FA
Cups and Premier League trophies, this is a
story that is unique to our football club, and the
ten exhibit panels on display at St James Park
use archival research and imagery to illustrate
the tale.
It is a story that takes us back more than 100
years, to a time where travelling to South
America was like visiting a whole new world. It
includes an epic journey, some remarkable
incidents, one incredible coincidence, and a
match that has gone down in history on both
sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to the exhibition, Aidan Hamilton
produced the book Have you ever played Brazil
(2014), which looks in greater detail at the
narrative behind the events of 1914. In addition
the book also takes a closer look at the
circumstances after the tour, when the Grecians
returned to England, only to find a continent at
war.
