Now Simms Scores the Hat-Trick
Beyond the actual goals at Luton on Wednesday evening, there was little for the crowd of seven thousand to enthuse over, though they were naturally pleased when Simms rounded off a good performance by doing the "hat-trick" for he has been getting into his best scoring form.
Exeter could only view the proceedings with gloom, it being the third time this season, which so far only consists of six matches, that the "hat-trick" has been performed against them.
Luton Town:-
Bailey. Graham. Tirrell. Molyneux. Foster. Roe. Hoar. Higginbotham. Simms. Mathieson. Bookman.
Referee:- Mr F.P. Farrow, of Bristol.
Exeter City:-
Fyrer. Pollard. Gaskell. Rigby. Mitton. Brown. Newman. Green (A.V). Vowles. Williams. Dockray.
The first goal was scored after play had been in progress for a little over 20 minutes. Higginbotham drew Fryer away from his goal and shot towards the empty net, and Simms ran in and prodded the ball over the line to make sure.
Half time Luton 1-0 Exeter City.
Simms obtained his second goal from the penalty spot when the second half was five minutes old. Gaskell kept out a fierce drive from Simms with his arm, and the penalty was easily converted by Luon's crack centre-forward. 20 minutes later Mathieson beat several men in a dazzling "cork-screw" dribble in mid-field, then gave to Hoar, who centred. Simms then hooked the leather towards the far end of the goal, and Fryer managed to tip it onto the far post, but it had crossed the line, and the referee was on hand to confirm the fact.
By the time the fourth goal was scored Simms had completed his "hat-trick," but his initiative and strength were boundless, for after breaking through in the middle of the field he let fly with one of his "specialities," and although Fryer stopped the shot, the ball was retrieved by Hoar, who rammed it home from ten yards.
Full time:- Luton Town 4-0 Exeter City.
