St Thomas's United. (h)

Grimsby Town v ECFC (L 2-0)
Attendance: 10,000
Blundell Park, Cleethorpes.

Good Start Not Maintained
A crowd of some 10000 people welcomed the first visit of Exeter City to Blundell Park, the Devon men being given a hearty reception. Collier returned to the Grimsby side after being away on International duty last week, playing for Wales against Scotland, at Aberdeen.
Exeter made three changes. Carrick, Vowles, and Makin all dropped, and replaced by Taylor, Hetherington, and McIntyre. It was Taylor's (pictured) first apperance with the Chiefs.

Grimsby Town:
Moody, Dawson, MacEachran, Gillow, Deacey, Storer, Spink, Collier, Talks, Morrall, Smith.

Referee:- Mr H. Spiers, of Rotherham.

Exeter City:
Pym, Coleburne and Feebery; Crawshaw, Green, Taylor, McIntyre, Appleton, Shields, Hetherington and Dockray.

Pym named the coin correctly, but there was no advantage to be gained, the air being still with very little wind. In repelling Grimsby's first rush Green was penalised for pushing, but from the free-kick the ball went sailing over the bar.
Exeter's defence, with an experimental intermediate line, were under pressure from the start, but the players covered each other well, and Taylor showed excellent judgement in his anticipation of Spink's next move, so that he was able to clear with plenty of time to spare.
After Talks had put his shot over the bar Exeter made progress, and won a corner. It was well placed by Dockray, but immediately cleared. Play was keen in the opening stages, with Exeter showing better form than last Saturday. Hetherington created an opening for Shields, but the shot from the old Huddersfield man was charged down, and in the next move Appleton fired wide.
After twenty minutes Grimsby took a corner on the right, which Spink dropped nicely into the goalmouth. Pym got his hands to the ball but failed to clear, and Storer banged it into the net from close range.
Exeter retaliated, and Moody saved from McIntyre at the expense of a corner with two City forwards rushing at him. Grimsby brought some heavy pressure to bear, but it only served to demonstrate the excellence of Pym's goalkeeping. The City custodian received three shots in rapid succession, and dispersed them with customary skill and coolness.
Two minutes before the interval Morrall added Grimsby's second goal with a low ball following a sharp skirmish close in.
H-T Grimsby 2-0 City

Exeter faded out in the second half, and their performance was disappointing after their bright opening. Pym alone stood between Grimsby and a big score.
F-T Grimsby 2-0 City.

Reserve Friendly.
City Reserves 7-0 St Thomas's United.
Exeter City's Western League eleven, who were without a League fixture today, met St Thomas's in a friendly at St James's Park.
The weather was dull. The ground was firm and in good order.

City Reserves:
Charles. Pollard. Betteridge. Lakin. Carrick. Hilton. Vowles. Brayshaw. Hesmondhalgh. Izzard. Kelland.

St Thomas's:
Hams. Bilbell. Densham. Boundy. Marsden. Denning. Hill. Shobrook. Bennett. Reed. Tozer.

Carrick won the toss, and Bennett started. The "Saints" did a lot of attacking, but Pollard and Betteridge were sound.

Two goals in a minute.
The Reserves then scored twice within a minute, Hesmondhalgh, from a penalty, and Brayshaw being the successful marksmen.
After a goal by Vowles had been disallowed for offside, Exeter again got through and Hesmondhalgh scored with a stiff shot. This was followed with another from the centre-forward.

City Reserves 4-0 St Thomas's United
.

Goals in the second half were obtained by Izzard and Hesmondhalgh (2).
