Match 38
26th March 1921
Luton Town (a)
Western League
Pontypridd.(h)
Luton Town 3-0 ECFC
At Ivy Road, Luton.
Attendance: 8,000
The weather was fine but cold at Luton today. The Grecians made one alteration, McIntyre taking the place of Appleton, who has a muscle strain. Luton also made a change, Roe coming in for Parker at centre half.
Luton:-
Bailey. Lennon. Tirrell. Molyneux. Roe. Lamb. Hoar. Shankland. Simms. Mathieson. Bookman.
Referee:-Mr J.W. Lucas.
Exeter City
Pym. Coleburne. Feebery. Crawshaw. Carrick. Green. McIntyre. Makin. Shields. Hetherington. Dockray.
Luton played stronger and better football than Exeter, and they fully deserved their victory and the points.
The City attack lacked sting, and the weakness at outside-right hampered the line.
Bailey had not a real shot to save all afternoon. The City worked hard, but their efforts were disjointed in comparison with those of Luton.
Coleburne was the best back on view, but he and Feebery failed to cover one another properly, thus the defence was inadequate at the critical moment. Pym was unfortunate. He made his usual quota of saves, and had no chance with the shots passed him.
The first goal was scored after 11 minutes' play. Mathieson lobbed the ball over Carrick's head to Simms, who standing between the Exeter backs, shot promptly well out of Pym's reach. This was the sum of the scoring in the first half.
Half-time:- Luton Town 1-0 Exeter City
Midway through the second half, Exeter had a lucky escape when a shot from Simms struck the foot of the post, and the ball travelled along the goal-line with the other Luton forwards unable to reach it.
25 minutes of the second half had elapsed when Luton scored again, Simms netting from Mathieson's pass. Mathieson, who played excellently throughout, accounted for the third 4 minutes later, and right at the end Simms drove another powerful shot against the post.
Full-Time:- Luton 3-0 Exeter City.

Exeter City Reserves 2-0 Pontypridd.
Serious Accident to an Exeter Half-Back
Lakin, the centre-half and captain of Exeter City Reserves, met with a serious and unlucky accident at St James's Park today. In attempting to clear the ball he slid under an opponent, and had the misfortune to break his cheek bone, and was removed to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with all possible haste.
The weather was clear, and there was a good attendance for this Western League match, the following players taking part:-
City Reserves.
Charles. Pollard. Betteridge. Taylor. Lakin. Hilton. Rouse. Brayshaw. Hesmondhalgh. Vowles. Kelland.
Pontypridd.
Davies. King. Collins. Rouse. Foxall. Spruce. Evans. Levi. Court. Jones. Machen.
Lakin won the toss, and had the advantage of the wind and the sun in the first half.
The visitors attacked with a fine combined movement, which was cleared by Pollard. Taylor supplied Kelland, from whose centre the ball was headed over the bar by Hesmondhalgh.
A mis-kick by Spruce let Hesmondhalgh through, and the ball was sent quickly out to Rouse, who raced Collins and Spruce, and succeeded in centring. Brayshaw met the ball, and found the net with an ideal shot.
Half-time:- City Reserves 1-0 Pontypridd.
Play was taken up to the Pontypridd end, and with the goal unguarded, with the single exception of Davies, Hesmondhalgh rammed the leather hard to the corner, the ball striking the upright and rolled into the net.
Full-time:- City Reserves 2-0 Pontypridd.
